Four JWEMC linemen traveled across the country to the deserts of the Navajo Nation in Arizona to help bring life-changing electrical service to families that have never had the luxury of just flipping a switch.
In the vast desert of northern Arizona, a group of dedicated Joe Wheeler EMC linemen traveled across the country to perform what many take for granted — bringing the miracle of electricity to those without it. As part of the Light Up Navajo initiative, Kenneth Hanvy, Jeremy Henderson, Drew Parker, and Ben McLemore embarked on a mission to deliver power to homes in the Navajo Nation, where thousands of families still live without electricity.
For most Americans, flipping a switch to turn on the lights, keeping food cold in the refrigerator, or enjoying the relief of air conditioning is part of everyday life. But in parts of the Navajo Nation, an estimated 13,000 homes remain disconnected from the electric grid. The experience was eye-opening for these linemen. Challenges on the Ground
The obstacles the linemen faced during their week in Arizona were unlike anything they had encountered before. Used to working in more accessible environments, they quickly learned that installing powerlines in the Navajo Nation would require a different level of perseverance and ingenuity. Roads were often non-existent, and they had to rely on bulldozers to pull their bucket trucks from one pole to the next. In certain areas, the bucket trucks couldn't even reach the poles, forcing the linemen to climb them manually—a time-consuming and physically demanding process.
“It felt like going back in time,” said Jeremy Henderson, one of the JWEMC linemen. “We’re used to working more quickly, but out there, it’s a whole different ball game. The terrain, the distances, everything was a challenge.” Despite working tirelessly for six days, the team was only able to connect power to two homes. This slow progress was initially frustrating, but as they got deeper into the project, they began to understand just how monumental each connection was.
The long drive to the first job site—a two-and-a-half-hour trek across desolate terrain—was an early indication of the challenges to come. Each home required meticulous work, from installing poles and wires to ensuring everything was properly connected. “It took us two and a half days to hook up one house,” Henderson recalled. “It was hard, but every time we powered up a home, it made all the effort worth it.”
The Emotional and Physical Impact
While the physical demands were considerable, the emotional toll of the experience was even more profound. Connecting just two homes might seem like a small feat, but for the families receiving electricity for the first time, it was life-changing. For the linemen, witnessing the reactions of these families was a powerful reminder of the importance of their work.
“I will say seeing that whole family about cry when you put them on—that made up for it,” said Ben McLemore. For these families, electricity meant more than just lights and appliances. In the harsh desert environment, it meant access to clean water, refrigeration for food, and a more comfortable living space.
One moment that stuck with the crew was when Kenneth Hanvy asked a young girl what she had been doing now that her family had electricity. Her simple response—“sitting around the fan”—underscored the difference electricity can make in such an unforgiving climate. It wasn’t just about lights or modern conveniences; it was about providing relief, comfort, and hope for a better quality of life.
A Lasting Commitment
Despite the grueling conditions and the slow pace of progress, every member of the JWEMC team expressed their willingness to return and continue the work. “In the seven and a half years I've been doing line work, it was the greatest experience I've ever got to be a part of,” said Drew Parker. The linemen walked away with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of how impactful their work could be.
The experience also inspired the linemen to think about the broader picture. Small actions, like connecting power to just two homes, can have far-reaching consequences. As Kenneth Hanvy reflected on the trip, he recalled a story about a boy throwing stranded jellyfish back into the ocean, one by one. When told he couldn’t make a difference, the boy replied, “I just made a difference to that one.” For the JWEMC linemen, this trip was about making a difference—one home, one family at a time.

It was a chance to be part of something bigger, to help people in a way that would have a lasting impact. They may have only powered two homes, but for the families living in those homes, the gift of electricity was life-changing.
